Every summer, whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) swim past Holbox Island following sustaining plankton and small fish. The largest known whale shark specimens are 50 ft (15 m) long, making them the largest fish in the world. However, they are harmless, docile filter feeders. The whale shark's body is stout but streamlined, like that of a whale. It is dark brown above, with many white or yellow spots, and white or yellow below.

The opportunity to swim and snorkel with Whale Sharks is brought to you by Underwater Editions ( UWE) in cooperation with the local community of Holbox Island.Started in 2002, UWE launched a long-term video and photo identification behavior research project of whale sharks. In 2003 with growing interest of tourists to visit the whale sharks, UWE became responsible for devoloping Eco-Tourism guidelines. In 2004 CONANP and UWE partecipated in the education and training of local guides and estabilished rules and guidelines for interaction with the endangered species. Now in 2006 we are ready to invite you enjoying in this magical experience.
